Part 1
“Put the phone down, or I’ll make sure you never breathe again!” My father’s roar echoed through the hallway as the heavy steel crowbar shattered my ribs with a sickening crunch. White-hot pain exploded through my chest, forcing a ragged scream from my throat as I collapsed onto the hard hardwood floor. Blood pooled beneath my cheek, warm and copper-scented. Just feet away, the lifeless body of our neighbor, Mark, lay twisted on the carpet. My younger sister, Chloe, stood over him, holding a kitchen knife slick with red. She wasn’t crying or panicked; she was smirking, casually wiping her blood-stained hands on her jeans.
I had walked into the living room five minutes ago to find Chloe plunging that blade into Mark’s chest after a heated argument over stolen money. When I pulled out my phone, terrified and desperate, my own father tackled me from behind to protect his favorite child. Now, trapped on the floor with broken ribs piercing my lungs, every single breath felt like inhaling liquid fire.
My hands trembled violently, but I managed to slip my fingers across the cracked screen of my phone. I pressed the emergency dial button and hit speakerphone just as my father raised the crowbar for a second strike to my head.
“911, what is your emergency?” a calm operator’s voice blared through the tiny speaker, cutting through the heavy silence of the room.
My father froze mid-swing, the iron bar hovering inches above my face. Chloe’s smug smile instantly vanished. But before I could choke out our address, my father recovered his senses. His eyes turned pitch black with fury as he slammed his heavy boot directly onto my wrist, snapping the bone and kicking the phone across the room. He picked up the crowbar once more, his knuckles white, determined to silence me forever before the operator could trace the call.
Part 2
“Finish him, Dad! He’s going to put us both in prison!” Chloe shrieked, her voice dropping all pretense of composure as she darted toward the phone to stomp it into pieces.
I choked on my own blood, fighting against the black spots blurring my vision. The pain in my side was unbearable, but adrenaline surged through my veins. As my father brought the crowbar down with killing force, I rolled desperately to the left. The heavy iron smashed into the floorboards where my head had been a second prior, sending sharp wooden splinters flying into the air.
Using the last bit of strength in my uninjured arm, I grabbed a heavy brass floor lamp beside the sofa and slammed it with all my weight into the back of my father’s knees. He groaned in shock, losing his balance and crashing heavily against the glass coffee table, shattering it into thousands of sharp fragments. The crowbar clattered out of his grip and rolled toward the hallway.
Chloe gasped and lunged at me with the kitchen knife, her eyes wide with unhinged rage. “You ruined everything, Leo!” she screamed, swinging the blade wildly.
I scrambled backward on my back, kicking my legs outward to keep her away. My shoe connected hard with her wrist, knocking the bloody weapon out of her hand. It slid beneath the couch out of reach. Just as my father began to push himself up from the broken glass, covered in cuts and bleeding profusely, the faint sound of wailing sirens echoed from down the street.
The operator hadn’t hung up; the open line had allowed emergency services to triangulate our location immediately. Panic seized both of them. My father looked at the doorway, then at Chloe, realization dawning on him that their cover-up was collapsing in real time.
Part 3
Footsteps pounded up the front porch stairs, followed by heavy thuds on the front door. “Police! Open up!” a deep voice shouted from outside.
My father’s face turned completely ghost-white. The terrifying monster who had just broken my ribs suddenly looked small, frail, and utterly defeated. Chloe backed away into the corner of the room, clutching her arms and beginning to sob hysterically, realizing that no amount of lying or manipulation could save her from a murder charge now.
Before either of them could make a move to run toward the back exit, officers kicked the front door open, guns drawn. “Hands in the air! Don’t move!” they commanded, taking in the horrific scene: Mark’s body, the blood-soaked floor, my father covered in glass, and me gasping for air against the wall. Within seconds, both my father and sister were thrown to the ground and handcuffed.
As the paramedics rushed in to stabilize my chest and lift me onto a stretcher, I looked over at my father one last time. He tried to catch my eye, silent tears finally rolling down his cheeks, pleading for mercy. But I simply looked away. Family loyalty died the moment he chose a murderer over his own son’s life.
