The menu prices added up to exactly $175. The bill placed in front of me said $988—and when I questioned it, the restaurant manager smiled and told me, “Pay it, or I’ll have security remove you.”

For a moment, I simply stared at him.

My name is Jonathan Reed, and the restaurant where I was sitting occupied the ground floor of the Reed Grand Hotel.

My hotel.

I had purchased the property fourteen years earlier, rebuilt it from a failing downtown business hotel into one of the most profitable luxury properties in the state, then stepped away from daily operations after my wife died.

Most employees knew my name.

Very few knew my face.

That evening, I had deliberately arrived alone in jeans, a plain jacket, and an old watch. I wanted to see the hotel as an ordinary guest saw it.

At first, dinner was excellent.

Steak: $78.

Wine: $52.

Soup, vegetables, dessert, coffee.

Total: $175 before tax and tip.

Then came the bill.
