The salesman wiped the glass before the old man had finished lifting his finger. Then he smiled and said, “There’s a kiosk downstairs with watches in your range.”

Thomas Reed looked at the clean circle where his hand had rested. Behind the glass lay a silver watch with a blue enamel dial.

“My wife helped design that face,” he said.

The salesman, Lucas, glanced at Thomas’s faded jacket and rain-darkened shoes.

“And my grandfather invented champagne. Are we buying something today?”

Two customers laughed. Thomas folded his hands to stop them shaking.

He had buried Eleanor eleven months earlier. That morning, sorting her sewing basket, he had found a sketch of the dial on the back of a grocery receipt. He wanted to hold the finished watch, just once, on what would have been her seventy-fifth birthday.

“May I see it?”

Lucas leaned closer.

“That piece costs eighteen thousand dollars.”

“I heard you.”

“Then hear this: we have actual customers waiting.”

A young employee near the repair counter looked up. Her name badge read MAYA.

“I can help him,” she said.

Lucas snapped his fingers toward a tray of straps.

“You can finish those.”

Thomas reached into his pocket and took out his own watch. Its leather band was cracked; its case carried forty years of scratches.

“Perhaps you could tell me why this loses time.”

Lucas barely glanced at it.

“Because it’s old.”

Maya stepped closer. Her eyes settled on the tiny engraved bridge visible through the watch’s crystal back.

“Sir, is that a hand-finished—”

“Enough,” Lucas said.

The manager emerged from an office, adjusting his cuffs. His badge identified him as Adrian Cole.

“Is there a problem?”

Thomas answered quietly. “I asked to look at a watch.”

Adrian surveyed him, then the expensive shopping bags beside the laughing customers.

“Our staff exercise discretion.”

“Based on what?”

“Whether a transaction appears likely.”

Thomas looked around the boutique: the walnut counters, the brass lamps, the name AURELINE above the entrance.

He had chosen that name at a kitchen table while Eleanor made tea.

“I see,” he said.

Lucas grinned. The manager had taken his side. The old man would shuffle out, and the afternoon would continue.

Instead, Thomas asked for a business card.

Adrian handed him one.

“Customer relations won’t get you a discount.”

Thomas slipped it into his wallet.

“No,” he said. “I expect they’ll have other things to discuss.”

As he turned, Maya pressed a repair envelope into his hand.

On its back she had written six words.

Please call me. Something is wrong.

Thomas tucked the envelope beside Eleanor’s folded sketch and stepped outside. Behind him, Lucas polished the same patch of glass again, laughing.

Maya called that evening from a bus shelter, speaking so softly Thomas could hear traffic above her voice.

“I’m sorry about today.”

“You weren’t the person who should apologize.”

A pause.

“Mr. Cole makes us screen people. Clothes, shoes, accents. He says some customers lower the atmosphere.”

“Have you complained?”

“To him. Then my hours disappeared.”

Thomas sat beneath the kitchen light. Eleanor’s sketch lay beside his telephone.

“There’s something else,” Maya continued. “A customer brought back a watch yesterday. Her receipt said we installed a new factory movement. The repair number wasn’t in our system.”

“Could it have been entered incorrectly?”

“I thought so. Then I found four more.”

She explained that Adrian sent selected repairs to an outside workshop. Customers paid for factory replacements; their watches returned without the usual service documentation.

“Lucas told me to stop checking.”

“Don’t take anything,” Thomas said. “Don’t confront them. Tell me only what you’ve personally seen.”

“Who are you?”

He looked toward a photograph of Eleanor standing beside their first workbench.

“The person who should have made it easier for you to report this.”

The following morning, Aureline’s general counsel received Thomas’s account and Maya’s contact details.

By noon, company security had preserved the boutique’s surveillance recordings and restricted deletion of its repair records. An independent investigator interviewed Maya away from the store.

Thomas requested one thing: nobody would question Adrian until the records were secure.

Meanwhile, Adrian summoned Maya into his office.

“Your elderly friend complained,” he said.

She said nothing.

Lucas lounged in the doorway.

“People like him want the experience without paying for it.”

Adrian slid a written warning across the desk.

“Insubordination. Sign.”

“What instruction did I refuse?”

“Don’t make this worse.”

She read the warning, wrote that she disputed it, and requested a copy.

Lucas laughed.

“Planning to sue us with your bus money?”

That afternoon, the investigator purchased a watch from the boutique’s certified preowned collection. Its paperwork promised an original movement.

At Aureline’s service center, two technicians opened it under a camera.

The movement inside was a cheaper replacement. Its identification had been altered.

Accounting then found payments to the outside workshop, approved by Adrian, alongside customer invoices charging for factory work that had never occurred.

There was enough to suspend both men and notify police. There was also enough to demand a broader audit.

Before opening the next morning, Adrian received a calendar invitation from headquarters.

He read the attendee list twice.

Thomas Reed. Founder. Chairman, Voting Trust.

Lucas peered over his shoulder.

“That can’t be him.”

Adrian opened the company archive.

There was Thomas thirty years younger, standing beside Eleanor beneath the first Aureline sign.

The jacket was newer.

The eyes were exactly the same.

For the first time, neither man had anything clever to say. Adrian reached for his keyboard, then stopped. A notice from company security filled the screen: his access had been suspended pending investigation. Downstairs, the boutique shutters remained closed. Beyond them, Thomas waited beside the investigator, holding a small folded drawing.

Adrian opened the staff entrance with hands that would not stay still.

“Mr. Reed. Yesterday was an unfortunate misunderstanding.”

Thomas stepped inside.

“Which part did you misunderstand?”

Lucas stood behind the counter, pale beneath the bright lights.

“I didn’t recognize you, sir.”

“I know.”

“We would have treated you differently.”

Thomas looked at him until Lucas lowered his eyes.

“That,” Thomas said, “is what you need to understand.”

The investigator placed a folder on the counter. General counsel joined them, along with the regional director.

Adrian attempted a smile.

“Surely we can resolve a service complaint internally.”

“This concerns repair fraud,” counsel said.

The smile vanished.

They showed him the purchased watch, the technicians’ report, and the matching invoices.

Adrian pushed the folder away.

“The workshop must have made an error.”

“Repeatedly?” the investigator asked.

Lucas took a step backward.

“I only handled sales.”

The investigator turned a page.

“Customers paid you for repairs described here as factory replacements. We have messages asking why their paperwork was missing.”

“Adrian told me what to say.”

Adrian swung toward him.

“Shut up.”

The words cracked through the silent showroom.

Thomas remembered Maya standing beside the straps, offering the smallest kindness and being ordered away.

“Your employment ends today,” the regional director said. “Both of you. You’ll receive the documentation through counsel.”

Adrian stared at Thomas.

“I have a family.”

“So do the customers whose money you took.”

“Give me a chance to repay it.”

“The company will reimburse them immediately,” Thomas said. “Your repayment is a matter for the lawyers.”

He did not raise his voice. Adrian kept waiting for anger he could flatter, bargain with, or blame.

Thomas gave him nothing to work with.

When security escorted them out, Lucas glanced toward the kiosk downstairs. He quickly looked away.

Thomas remained at the counter after everyone else had moved into the office.

“May I see the blue watch?” he asked Maya.

She unlocked the case and set it on velvet.

He unfolded Eleanor’s sketch beside it. The tiny penciled stars matched those around the dial.

For a moment, he could not speak.

“She drew those while waiting for the kettle,” he finally said.

Maya let him take his time.

Eight months later, the audit had identified dozens of fraudulent repairs. Adrian pleaded guilty to fraud and received a prison sentence. Lucas, whose messages established knowing participation, received probation, community service, and a restitution order.

Aureline contacted every affected customer. Thomas attended the meetings where executives explained how complaints had been ignored. Several managers lost their jobs; an independent reporting line replaced the old process.

Maya completed her watchmaking apprenticeship with company funding.

On Eleanor’s next birthday, Thomas visited her workshop wearing his faded jacket.

His repaired watch ticked steadily.

Maya offered him tea.

He sat by the window, beneath a framed copy of Eleanor’s sketch, and watched her explain a repair to a man in paint-stained overalls.

Outside, rain silvered the street.

Thomas lifted his cup.

For once, he had nowhere else to be.
